God in His Word – Part 1

“I am the LORD, and there is no other; Besides Me there is no God. I will gird you, though you have not known Me.” (Isaiah 45:5)

Only a fool who gives no thought to his surroundings would not know that there is a God above who created the universe and all that is within for the senses to observe. But the wise have discerned the divine design of creation and know that it is beyond circumstance and man’s ability to fully comprehend. The fool has denied God and His existence, a fatal error they shall abide in for eternity. In their heart they have rejected the God who has created them and the world they live in. They have rejected His Word and thus have lived lives in corruption. Though they believe they are doing good their deeds are corruptible in the sight of God. “The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, they have committed abominable deeds; There is no one who does good.” (Psalm 14:1) Just as the Arch Angel Lucifer, the musician, whose beautiful music became as noise to God the Creator, Lucifer’s pride caused Him to desire to be as the Most High God his Creator. “I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.” (Isaiah 14:14)

The wise men seek God to know Him, to fellowship with Him, and to serve Him. They can clearly see and appreciate the beauty of His creation and give Him the glory for the majestic work that He has done. For all of mankind is without excuse, save their self-centered desire to be as God, which was the sin of our fall in the Garden of Eden, “For God knows that in the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” (Genesis 3:5) and can clearly see His divine nature and eternal power. “For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse.” (Romans 1:20) As the Scripture in the Bible is the very words of God, “For this reason we also constantly thank God that when you received the word of God which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men, but for what it really is, the word of God, which also performs its work in you who believe.” (1 Thessalonians 2:13) He never attempts to prove His existence, rather it is assumed from the very beginning. “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” (Genesis 1:1)

First we much have a correct definition of God, as if we view Him as something other than who He is or have a false idea of Him that could lead to idolatry. God is holy, separate from His creation. He is above His creation and man is not, cannot, and will never be as God. In the book of Psalm we read a reproof that God gave a man that made a false accusation to God. It was a wicked man who thought that he was as God or God was as he. “These things you have done and I kept silence; You thought that I was just like you; I will reprove you and state the case in order before your eyes.” (Psalm 50:21)

When we think of God we should see His being as a supreme being, the Creator and Master of His creation. He is self-existent, all powerful, all knowing, and ever present. God is perfect in goodness, power, and the beginning of all wisdom. “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” (Proverbs 9:10) So we will look then at what the Scripture reveals of His nature, character, and work.

In finding the nature of God there are truths that He has made known to us through His Word. By His mercy towards us God has revealed some of His qualities. First He is not like us in that we are formed from the dust of the earth. “Then the LORD God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.” (Genesis 2:7) God is intangible and cannot be seen by the human eye and man cannot be in the presence of God in his present state because we are sinful beings. “But He said, “You cannot see My face, for no man can see Me and live!” (Exodus 33:20) God is a Spirit and lives in the spiritual realm, a realm in which man is destined to be in the near future of his time. Some will go to the Kingdom of God and most will go to the pit below depending on the choices that are made here in the physical realm. When we worship God we must worship Him in the spirit and we must worship Him in the truth, as God lives in perfect truth and is all knowing of His creation. “God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” (John 4:24)

It is hard for the finite mind of man to understand that God is one and yet lives in a perfect society of three, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We see all three at the Baptism of the Son Jesus. “After being baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove and lighting on Him, and behold, a voice out of the heavens said, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased.” (Matthew 3:16-17) Jesus is the Son of God and at His Baptism the Holy Spirit descended upon Him and a voice from heaven, the Father, spoke.

God is infinite and has always existed and has no beginning and has no end. “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.” (Revelation 22:13) God does not exist in the confines of time and is able to step in and out of time by His will. Man in the world lives in the measure of time and when man leaves this world time will no longer be measureable, as he will be in eternity. Therefore God is immortal and we see Him as eternal. This is the quality that we have also in that God breathed His Spirit into man and we are spiritually eternal as well. We are not all immortal, as those who reject God will suffer the second death. God is the master of His creation and therefore the King of all creation. “Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.” (1 Timothy 1:17)

There is no comparison to God. Some have said in error that the opposite of God is Satan. But Satan is a created being, an arch angel that fell from God’s glory as a result of sin. His sin was that of pride basically. Satan was so proud of himself that he wanted to be as the Most High God. Satan was cast out of heaven to the earth before the creation of man and the world is his dominion. When man was created here on earth Satan must have thought man would be under his charge. But God created man for His glory not Satan’s and the spiritual war continues. There is none as God as He is the only God. “For this reason You are great, O Lord GOD; for there is none like You, and there is no God besides You, according to all that we have heard with our ears.” (2 Samuel 7:22)

God cannot change who He is. God is the truth and His Word is the truth, “Therefore Pilate said to Him, “So You are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say correctly that I am a king. For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.” (John 18:37) God is not only a God of love He is just. Because of His love for mankind His mercy towards man endures through the ages. “Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good, For His lovingkindness is everlasting.” (Psalm 136:1) All other god’s are creations of man, there is only one unchangeable God. “For I, the LORD, do not change; therefore you, O sons of Jacob, are not consumed.” (Malachi 3:6)

God exist outside of His creation and all through His creation. There is nowhere in God’s creation that He does not exist. In the Garden of Eden Adam and Eve tried to hide from God after they had fallen to sin. But that was not possible. Still today people try to hide their activity from God and that is not possible. No man knows how far space goes but we can be assured that wherever that is God is there. “Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence? If I ascend to heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in Sheol, behold, You are there. If I take the wings of the dawn, If I dwell in the remotest part of the sea, Even there Your hand will lead me, And Your right hand will lay hold of me. If I say, “Surely the darkness will overwhelm me, And the light around me will be night,” Even the darkness is not dark to You, And the night is as bright as the day. Darkness and light are alike to You.” (Psalm 139:7-12)

As God is above His creation He is able to see the events of all His creation. He knows and exist before the beginning and long after our end and is present at both ends of eternity. Therefore God has all knowledge of all things in His creation both in the past, present, and into all of the future. “Great is our Lord and abundant in strength; His understanding is infinite.” (Psalm 147:5)

All of God’s creation is His, He is the Master of His creation and has all power and authority over His creation. God has control over events within His creation in that He can cause all things to work together according to His plan and purpose. “Then I heard something like the voice of a great multitude and like the sound of many waters and like the sound of mighty peals of thunder, saying, “Hallelujah! For the Lord our God, the Almighty, reigns.” (Revelation 19:6)
